Microsoft will make its Walkie Talkie function available to all Microsoft Teams users today. Microsoft Teams users can turn their smartphones or tablets into walkie-talkies that work over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Walkie Talkie allows them to do this. It was first announced two years ago , and has been mostly in preview since then. The feature launched widely on Android in September of 2020, but now Microsoft says it’s available for Zebra mobile devices as well as iPhones and iPads.

Microsoft primarily targeted frontline employees, those who deal with customers and manage day-to-day business operations within companies. Collaboration with Zebra Technologies allows it to work with a dedicated push button for secure and quick communications. These devices are widely used by frontline workers who have been instrumental in navigating the world through the current pandemic.

Walkie-talkie features are still rare in communications apps. WhatsApp lets you record snippets of audio than can be sent and received, and Slack launched its Discord-like Huddles feature last year to let people drop in and out of calls easily. Apple did launch its own walkie-talkie feature on the Apple Watch in 2018, using push-to-talk over a FaceTime Audio call.
