Destiny 2’s Festival of the Lost is usually its Halloween-themed event, and while there is certainly some spookiness going on here in 2021, its primary vibe this year?
Dinosaurs, lots of dinosaurs.
This stems from a fan-voted pool earlier in the year where Destiny players were asked if they’d rather have dinosaur or classic movie monster-themed Festival of the Lost armor this year. Dinosaurs easily won, and that has now translated into other aspects of the event, including the new Jurassic Green pulse rifle, an event weapon which is a reprisal of the Lincoln Green…now with scales.
We have lost the Haunted Forest after three years, given that Mercury was sunset, but it has now been replaced with Haunted Sectors, and we got our first look at them in the trailer below:
We are fighting “Headless One” bosses that appear to by Hive Abyss Knights with Headless Horseman-style pumpkin heads. Glint narrates, and tells us they are filled with loot. We also appear to have the ability to throw exploding pumpkin bombs at them, which I assume will use the “snowball” mechanic we’ve seen before, but with actual damage.
There does appear to be some sort of story attached to Festival of the Lost this year, according to the official description:
An Exo and a Vex Mind have merged to become something… new, a Guardian on Nessus is being hunted for their Ghost, and headless creatures prowl through the dark chasms of the Moon. Grab your favorite mask, join a fireteam, and embark on three new tales of terror.
There’s also something called the “Book of the Forgotten,” which sounds like it will be a lore book full of…spooky stories maybe?
A book filled with memorable characters and heroic deeds—well, almost filled. If you can find the missing pages and avoid smudging the words with chocolate, you’ll have quite a story to tell. When you do, make sure the flashlight is directly under your chin.
Cosmetics include a ship that looks like Savathun’s moth wings, a spider-webbed ghost and a glowing, chained ghost. We’ve already seen a Day of the Dead ghost previewed as well. Not clear which of these may be earned, and which will cost silver. The dinosaur set will be sold, obviously, though you can pick it up for Bright Dust instead of Silver if you have enough.
This all looks…pretty great? I’m definitely looking forward to checking this out in a few hours, and I really like the changes they appear to have made, at least in theory. Will have a video up later and analysis tomorrow.
