MOSCOW — Brittney Griner’s lawyer said that her Russian pre-trial detention has been extended by one week.

Alexander Boykov said to The Associated Press that he believes the short extension of her detention indicates that the case will be brought to trial soon. She has been held in detention for almost three months.

She was handcuffed with her hair covered in red hoodie, and her face lowered.

Boykov said “We did not receive any complaints about the detention conditions from our client.”

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was detained at a Moscow airport after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

According to the Biden administration, Griner 31, has been wrongfully detained. The WNBA has been working with the U.S. to release Griner, but there have not been any visible results.

The Russians described Griner’s case in a criminal offense, but did not make any political associations.

However, it occurs amid Russia’s war on Ukraine which has brought relations between the U.S. and Russia to their lowest point since the Cold War.

Despite this strain, Russia and America executed an unexpected prisoner swap last month. They traded Trevor Reed, an ex-marine, for Konstantin Yaroshenko.
